The use of blow torches by burglars has become an alarming trend in recent times.  As a locksmith in Doncaster, I’ve encountered various other methods used by thieves to break into homes, but the blow torch method is particularly concerning.

A method that thieves use to gain access to a property is to use a blow torch to burn through uPVC doors. This unusual method only works where the door hasn’t a reinforced panel or three-star-rated locks.

The aim is to burn the handle to make the lock snap easier, or burn through the door. If you leave the keys in the lock, reach through and unlock it. I have seen instances where someone melted the outside panel and removed the glass. Fortunately, as a Doncaster locksmith, I have only encountered it once.

What would I recommend to prevent burglars from using blowhards on your property? Composite doors are better if you are considering a new door. But you can still use this method. It takes longer. Three-star rated locks are a must on all doors. If everybody did upgrade their locks, theft would become very difficult. Another option is to upgrade the handles to Pas 24 – 2 star rated versions. I like these handles, but the downside is fitting them to all doors is impossible. Finally, do not leave keys in the back of doors or on view. Leaving car and house keys on view after bed is asking for trouble. Remember, thieves look for easy options. If they liked hard ones, they would get a job!
